The minister's cat is a Xyloid (similar to wood.) cat (dog)
The phrase “thick as two short planks” comes to mind immediately when I think of Benji (dog). With his strange little “limp” Benji would also have made a great “Woodentops” dog. (for those of you who are too young to remember the “Woodentops”, it was an old children’s T.V. show).
There are other things however that make me think of Benji when I think of wood. Wood has a wonderful feeling to it when the rough edges have been taken away, and can then be made into many useful things.
For many people, stroking a dog can be very relaxing and comforting; it can be a reminder that you are not alone. When Benji first came he was too hyper and jumpy himself to be seen in this way, but as the “rough edges” of his nerves were smoothed down with love and affection, he did become a great companion.
Isn’t it a wonderful thought that God can do the same with us? He can take our “rough edges” and smooth them down with His love and forgiveness, and make us instruments of calmness and peace for other people.
“You get us ready for life: you probe for our soft spots, you knock off our rough edges. And I'm feeling so fit, so safe: made right, kept right.” Psalm 7;9 (Message version)
p.s. wood also has a wonderful smell………….maybe that aspect of wood is NOT a good comparison with Benji!!
